Every classroom will celebrate the cultural diversity of communities around the world . The Early Childhood Program 3 year olds prepare for Catholic Schools Week by learning and celebrating the country of Greece. The students will be introduced to the geography, religion and cultural aspects identifying that country. They are learning about the flag of Greece and practicing fine motor skills.

This season of Advent every grade uses this time of reflection in joyful expectation of Christ's coming among us. During this time of preparation, we also acknowledge the sins that have separated us from God and each other. During this season our students will also have the opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation which fills us with God's abundant grace. Our second graders will celebrate First Reconciliation on Wednesday.

Five students in 8th grade were received as members of the National Junior Honor Society. These students were selected based on these qualifications: scholarship (minimum 3.75 GPA) ; service (demonstrating volunteer or service hours); character and citizenship ( preserving an excellent record of behavior in and out of school) and leadership (participating in leadership roles in extracurricular activities). Our newest members of NJHS are: Gabrielle Abrams, Jolie Gracy, Thomas Hryniewicz, Jacob Osypka and Lan Truong. Congratulations!
Our Middle School Science Fair

The middle school Science curriculum includes oral presentations of experiments for a selected panel of outside judges. Students formulated a hypothesis, designed an experiment and analyzed their research to formulate a conclusion. Students receiving the highest point value for their experiment included: Daniel Rodriquez (6th grade): "How Does A Hovercraft Work?"; Arnaldo Cintron (7th grade): "Which Popcorn Brand Pops The Most Kernels?" Tom Hryniewicz: " Not So Sweet: How Much Sugar is Really in Your Soda?" Congratulations to all middle schoolers for their outstanding science fair experiments!
Great American Teach In At Our School

The Teach-In introduced students to career options they might never have considered, hobbies they might never have discovered and activities they might never have experienced. Twin Day To Support Our Twin Parish In Haiti

Our school choir was honored to be selected to represent all private schools in the region at the "Celebration of Achievement" gala for the Step Up Foundation of Florida. The students performed a medley of songs from "Godspell Jr." and "Beauty and the Beast Jr." on the stage at Tampa Theatre. They performed beautifully and professionally and were so excited to be part of this special event.

The students in the Early Childhood Program enjoy a music curriculum that includes learning to write music on the staff. The students learned to draw a treble clef, quarter notes that matched the 4 for the time signature and can identify the barline and repeat signs as musical concepts.

The kindergarten class prepared their very own pumpkin patch outside their classroom windows. They planted pumpkin seeds, watered their garden and charted the growth of the pumpkin plants everyday as they walked from the playground into their classroom. The children have been so excited to see their creations grow! What a beautiful and relevant experience for them.

Blessing Of Our Animals

Family pets of all shapes, sizes and types participated in the school's pet blessing in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi who loved all creatures. The school choir sang the songs "One Ohana" (one family) and "The good Lord made it all" as Father Gary sprinkled Holy water on dogs, cats, snakes and even a ferret. The entire school body participated in this annual event and the children were visibly excited to see all the animals!

Second graders love to read! Their reading assignment was the story "Flat Stanley" by Jeff Brown. The activity incorporated writing and a book report by each student supporting the story elements of characters, setting, main idea and illustrations. Students mailed their own "Flat Stanley" to a relative or friend. Each student shared letters from relatives, brochures and pictures taken with "Flat Stanley" in their hometown. What fun!

Four students from our school were recognized by the City of Dunedin Public Library which sponsored a summer reading program for children. The program was designed to motivate and engage children to read throughout the summer. Hadley and Salay Donoghue, Vinny Abudi and Sydney Abrams were in the top group of readers! They were required to maintain a reading log of their book selections. In partnership with the school media program these students attended morning breakfast with our principal Mr. Fulford in recognition of their achievements!

Art and Music classes: A Meaningful Integration

Students in 1st and 2nd grades have studied the composer Antonio Vivaldi and his famous program orchestral work "The Four Seasons" including the two movements "Summer" and "Autumn". Poems related to each movement were discussed in music classes and then integrated with the art program. Students created butterflies for the "Summer" movement and leaves for the "Autumn" movement. A meaningful integration at work!

Mission Trip to Haiti Summer 2014

The mission trip to our twin parish Sacred Heart in Acul des Pins was a life changing experience for our teachers that brought seven suitcases of medical supplies donated by the parish. The teachers taught the children English and shared cultural experiences. The people of Acul des Pins were so grateful for all the blessings they received from our parish including summer camps that served nearly 100 children, daily meals and organized learning opportunities.

We are collecting items for our twin parish in Acul des Pins Haiti June 28 through July 13. In the Conmy Center gym is a display of tags with specific items requested for the Haiti parish including antibacterial soap, multi vitamins for children and adults, toothbrushes and saline eye drop solution. All purchased items will be taken this summer to Haiti by three OLL teachers who are on a mission trip to Haiti.

Our Lady of Lourdes School Garden Grant Awarded

For the 2013-2014 school year, the 7th grade students at Our Lady of Lourdes and Mrs. Lynn were busy planting, weeding, and harvesting the vegetables from the School Garden. A $550 Garden grant was given to the school through The Florida Agriculture in the Classroom, Inc. 2013 Volunteer Grants. The grant was written by Dennis Gullo, an OLL parishioner. The four raised garden beds were built by Dennis Gullo, Steve Walker, and Marc Harvey on school grounds. The students in the life science program learned of the Florida Agriculture: Past, Present, & Future. Throughout the school year, 20 - 7th grade students took care of the garden as a part of their curriculum and according to grant guidelines. When harvested, the vegetables were used to feed the community of Pinellas Hope Homeless Shelter and the OLL School community. The students have enjoyed learning and working the garden this year. It has been a learning experience for the novice and seasoned gardeners alike.

The 4th grade class just completed a month long project on a Florida County of their choice. For the assignment students researched a Florida county that they chose on a variety of different topics. This project was presented through written, visual, and oral presentation of an organized notebook on their chosen Florida county.

On May 21, the third grade class explored our school's beautiful community of Dunedin. They visited the Dunedin Historical Museum for a hands-on history experience and then enjoyed lunch in Edgewater Park. Later, the class stopped by the Dunedin Public Library for a tour and a preview of upcoming summer reading programs. What a wonderful way to explore and teach about our own Dunedin area!

The Hale Senior Center of the City of Dunedin invited the 6th grade students to participate in an intergenerational line dance class with their members and instructor. Students and adults learned line dances to "Broken Stones; Little White Church; Electric Slide; Cha Cha Slide". All ages enjoyed exercising to music! We watched adult line dancers perform to "Stand By Me".
Music Field Trip To Florida Orchestra Concert

On Tuesday May 13th first and second grades attended a classical concert by The Florida Orchestra at Ruth Eckerd Hall Performing Arts Center. The orchestra performed music by Stravinsky ("The Firebird"), Dvorak ("New World Symphony") and Rossini ("The Barber of Seville"). The concert reinforced vocabulary and concepts taught in music class such as "largo, overture, finale, conductor" and melodic shapes and phrases highlighted by different orchestral sections. The students were enthusiastic and attentive during the performance!

Our second graders attended a retreat in Philippe Park to prepare them to receive the Sacrament of First Holy Communion. The students excitedly awaited the weekend to receive our Lord Jesus for the first time during one of the First Communion Masses. The second graders also received Communion at the school-led Thursday Mass.

Our beloved retiring athletic director Mrs. Sherry Schaibly was honored at this year's sports banquet for her 28 years of dedicated service to the school. Mrs. Schaibly was also recognized by the Pinellas District Superintendent Mrs. Elizabeth Fulham for her 42 years of service to the Diocese. The graduating class of 2014 presented Mrs. Schaibly with a model version of a sign that has been placed at the entrance of our athletic fields in her honor. The highlight of the evening was the presentation by Fr. Gary of a Blessing from Pope Francis in thanksgiving of her commitment to Catholic education.
Our Faith In Action: The Pinellas Hope project

PINELLAS HOPE: "Our Faith in Action!" The entire school participated in making sandwiches, decorating the lunch bags, and putting together the lunches for the homeless on Wednesday, May 14th. The Student Council toured the grounds and later served lunch at Pinellas Hope. The residents were very appreciative and clapped as the students left the kitchen. It was a eye-opening experience for all!

A student cast and crew of over 60 presented the musical "Beauty and The Beast Jr" Mother's Day weekend for the parish and local community. Students from 1st through 8th grade sang and danced their way through the story of Belle and the Beast/Prince. The students deserved all the congratulations and enthusiastic responses from the audience! Thank you to all the parents and adults who contributed their time and talents to make this show a success.

The 7th graders have studied DNA, heredity and genetics. They created models and diagrams to help with the comprehension of concepts. Recently they extracted cheek cells using a "Gatorade swish-method" breaking down the cellular membranes with detergent, separating the DNA with enzymes and precipitating out the DNA with alcohol.

The 6th grade science classes developed emergency disaster plans including evacuation procedures, safe areas and meeting places. They became meteorologists and developed a weather map involving precipitation, isotherms, isobars and pressure systems. Students presented their weather maps on the Smart Board adopting the role of a meteorologist.

We are extremely proud of how the kindergarten students represented themselves and the school. Bay News 9 filmed the class engaged in cross-curricular activities in social studies, music and art related to Mrs. Michelle Obama's trip to China. The students followed Mrs. Obama's trip through her blog and website as she described her global education experiences in Beijing, Xian and Chengdu. Congratulations to the class, Ms. Patti Walker, Ms. Avril , Mrs. Russo (social studies units), Mrs. Donner (art unit) and Mrs. Wong-Stark (music unit)!

On Monday students wore green shirts and jeans and raised $363.07 in donations for our twin school in Haiti. Through the leadership of Mrs. Lynn and the Student Council, the school body has raised $2057.07 for the school children of Haiti. We have great students!

Mr. Guntli's math classes learned about PI, the ratio of the circumference of a circle to the diameter and then celebrated with some pie on PI Day, which is on 3/14. The value of PI is 3.14 and PI is used in many calculations involving circles.

Following Pope Francis' call to find the extraordinary in our everyday lives, our Lenten Journey is about "The hero inside me". Students can take pictures of themselves standing as a heroic figure from the Old Testament and post their own experiences on the church "Hero Wall of Fame".

The 4th grade students attended Math Day hosted at Central Catholic High School with other schools from the Diocese of St. Petersburg. This day is organized and led by high school students of the Math Honors Society. All of the students worked very hard and truly enjoyed the day dedicated to Math!
Middle School attends premiere showing of the movie "Son Of God"

Middle school recently attended the movie "Son Of God" that highlights the journey and mission of Jesus Christ with special emphasis on His relationship with the twelve Apostles. The students then wrote journals in Religion class about their thoughts on the movie, and all of them reflected positive ideas. Especially during this Lenten season, “Son of God” serves as an important reminder to follow Christ, Repent, and live the Gospel.

School-led Ash Wednesday Mass with the parish to begin the Season of Lent. Students served in the choir, as readers, psalmist and cantors, altar servers, greeters and school ambassadors. Matthew Kelly's book on CD "The Four Signs Of A Dynamic Catholic" were available to all households. Catholic Relief Services ‘Rice Bowls’ were blessed and distributed at the Ash Wednesday Masses.

Our group "Harmonic Blends" began as a 6 week pilot project in January 2013 and resumed in 2014. This program involved adults members of a local dulcimer community who taught students to play this stringed instrument.

Show choir students provided the evening entertainment with songs from musicals and the movies including "Hallelujah" from Shrek, "Under The Sea" from The Little Mermaid and "The Unbirthday Song" from Alice in Wonderland.

Valentine's Day With Second Grade

Second grade spent this week learning how to write a Friendly letter. Each student wrote to someone in the class. The valentine letters were mailed out and sent to a special friend. They also made Valentine bags and boxes for our treats. Parents came in at the end of the day and surprised the class with special Valentine's treats to eat!

Our school's Student Council has organized, managed and maintained several important service projects under the guidance of Mrs. Lynn. The Thanksgiving Food Drive to benefit St. Vincent DePaul Society collected over 1,100 cans. In January, student council organized a diaper and baby wipes drive for the Kimberly home. A total of 381 items were collected! The school Store and "Jeans Day" Friday has raised over $1443.00 for our partner school in Haiti. Haiti

Classrooms were decorated to resemble a specific country. Students studied the history, geography, religion and traditions including traditional foods and music! Students toured the classrooms and had passports stamped. The day culminated in a school-wide fashion show with students dressed in traditional costumes.

Mr. Fulford, Father Gary and Mr. Pico visited our twin parish and school, dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, at Acul des Pins in Haiti. The needs of the Haitian school were discussed with the pastor, principal and parish council. Five laptop computers were presented to the Haitian school.
Achievement of the Arts Award!

Mrs. Carolyn Wong-Stark received the Achievement of the Arts Award from the City of Dunedin's Mayor's Top Apple Awards Ceremony. This award was given in response to her nomination by our school's leadership team for the implementation of our Inter-generational music program. Senior volunteers teach our sixth grade students over six weeks how to play the dulcimer, an Appalachian stringed instrument. In return, our sixth grade students teach the senior volunteers how to play the hand bells. This is a wonderful experience and opportunity for everyone involved. We congratulate her for her outstanding contribution to our school and community!

At a time when people often communicate through texts and emails, a face-to-face intergenerational program in Dunedin has children and seniors making beautiful music together. They call their group Harmonic Blends. Sixth-graders and older adults are taking turns teaching each other to play different musical instruments.

Blessing Of Our Animals
Family pets of all sizes, shapes and types received a blessing from Father Gary during the school's annual event in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi who loved all creatures. The school choir sang the songs "One Ohana" (one family) and "The good Lord made it all" while the entire school body watched with excitement as dogs, cats, snakes and even a ferret received a sprinkling of Holy water.
